Learn from Pakde Haryanto, Master of Black and White Photography

By Reska Donaga

Doi pernah recommend gw untuk dateng seminar ke salah satu master black and white, Pakde Haryanto, cek Instagramnya here.

The day, surprisingly the class is a little bit crowd, there is 30 – 40 people joining. So here we go, Pakde Haryanto comes, old man 40 – 50 y.o I think, long white hair – art man typically, and a little bit formal wearing a nice white suit and dog Martin.

Sebetulnya gw ga pernah ketemu or kenal ma professional photographer, kecuali Agung Lawerissa.
Back to the class Pakde, awalnya pakde kenalin diri dan tunjukin beberapa hasil2 foto2 nya.
Pakde cerita tentang perjalanan dia photo traveling ke gunung Bromo, bagus2 euy fotonya! cek aja di Instagram nya here.
Beberapa cerita lucu tentang menunggu moment where dia harus berhari2 untuk tunggu moment kabut yang sempurna di satu titik spot, yang pastinya Indomie selalu menemani, he said.

Finally, the most important session I’m waiting for. Q&A

Gw dateng itu sebetulnya pengen dengerin pendapat kenapa pakde suka black and white photography, pengen dapet point of view orang yang memang uda professional di bidang black and white. Sekaligus validating my own point of view. So here we go my question:

What the message that you ussually want to deliver thru your B&W captures?

Ternyata gw dapet jawaban di luar expetasi, he answered
Nothing! I never think about the message. I capture a moment then lets people guess it. It is free for people to interpret my capture. So I don’t want to direct them.

Okay, this is interesting, never thought about it. Tapi jawaban dia bikin gw semakin penasaran tentang point of view nya pakde.

Lanjutan session, pakde jelasin tentang tehnik best practice dia untuk ambil gambar black and white.
Dan mostly pakde showing beberapa foto black and white yang bagus, dan yang paling menarik pakde introduces his inspirator of black and white photography from the east coast – west coast style. Such as:

Ansel Adam, John Sexton, John Wimberly, Chip Firelli, Trent Parke,
Elliot Erwitt, Gustave Dore.

Sopo iki! Apalagi denger kalo foto black and white jaman dulu was very manual. Ga seperti sekarang tinggal setting puter2 aja.

Menurut gw pakde is very informative and inspiring.
Thank You pakde Haryanto for your sharing today, see you!

Everyone has their Visual Library.
To make an excellent capture, people need to rich his visual library to know what is worthy of capture. Then compare yours to others which you think is best on the B&W class. then you will see where you are!

Colour is a duplication, black and white is an interpretation

There are 2 essential things when to deliver a message.
#1 Think about yourself.

#2 People, who will view your capture, are they easily understand with your message on capture?
